When David’s mighty men risked their lives to bring him water from Bethlehem, they weren’t just following orders—they were serving with joyful hearts, eager to please their king. Their faithfulness, recorded in Chronicles, shows us something beautiful about God’s kingdom work. “And three of the thirty captains went down to the rock to David…and said, Oh that one would give me drink of the water of the well of Bethlehem” (1 Chronicles 11:15, 17). Without hesitation, these men broke through enemy lines simply because David expressed a desire. Their reward? The joy of seeing David pleased with their service.
Behind every faithful servant’s actions, the Lord is working a greater purpose than we can see in the moment. As Proverbs 25:19 reminds us by contrast, “Confidence in an unfaithful man in time of trouble is like a broken tooth, and a foot out of joint”—but how precious is the faithful servant on whom the Lord can depend! Like the men who came to David “day by day” (1 Chronicles 12:22), God builds His work through the consistent faithfulness of His people. He adds “line upon line, precept upon precept” (Isaiah 28:10), accomplishing His purposes not all at once, but through daily acts of obedience.
We may not see the full picture of what God is building through our faithfulness today. We’re simply bringing cups of water, so to speak, serving where He’s placed us. But the Lord promises that His word “shall not return unto me void, but it shall accomplish that which I please, and it shall prosper in the thing whereto I sent it” (Isaiah 55:11). Each Sunday school lesson taught, each song sung, each prayer offered, each invitation extended—none of these are wasted in God’s economy.
Take heart in your faithful service! The joy isn’t just in seeing immediate results, but in knowing we’re pleasing the King. As we continue serving together, we can anticipate with excitement what God is building among us, one faithful act at a time. Just as those who gathered around David couldn’t have imagined the glorious kingdom that would result from their loyalty, we cannot fully comprehend what the Lord is accomplishing through our collective faithfulness today.
